Forged metal products generally have higher strength and are often tougher than metals machined in castings. Metal forgings are less likely to shatter when in contact with other objects. The increase in strength is a result of how the metal is forced into a new shape by pressing or hammering during the forging process. In contrast to other manufacturing methods, the grains of the metal are stretched during the process, aligning in one direction rather than randomly. At the end of the forging process, the resulting metal is stronger than when it was cast.
However, forging has size limitations. Unlike casting, forging makes it more difficult to shape the metal because the process keeps the metal solid. Because forging is more difficult to change the shape of the metal, the size and thickness of forged metal is limited. The larger the part of the metal to be worked, the harder it is to forge.
With casting, molten metal flows into a mold or cavities in a mold, allowing more complex shapes to be easily produced. Almost any material can be cast and products of up to 200 tons can be manufactured. Casting is usually much cheaper than forging. Both casting and forging have their pros and cons, so the better method depends on what is being manufactured. |
