Pokémon Legends: Z-A is packed with fascinating lore, hidden details, and clever references that add layers of depth to the game. Some of these elements are easy to overlook, but if you take the time to explore, you'll find some real gems. In this article, we'll delve into some of the coolest Easter eggs and references scattered throughout the game, and I’ll share a few interesting insights that even the most dedicated players might have missed.
1. Zach: The Punching Bag with a Hidden Reference
One of the first notable characters you encounter in the ZA Royale is Zach, who is ranked Z in the game. He's often dismissed as a joke character because of his constant chatter about being the best taxi driver and trainer, despite his ranking. However, there’s more to Zach than meets the eye.
Zach's character seems to be a direct reference to Glass Joe from the Punch-Out!! series. In both games, the first character you face is comically weak, having lost 99 battles in a row before finally facing the player. Furthermore, Glass Joe is known to hail from Paris, which ties back to the setting of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, which takes place in Lumios City—an area inspired by Paris. It's a subtle, yet clever homage to Punch-Out!!, and adds an extra layer of fun for those who recognize the reference.
2. Yavon and Zavi: A Nod to Pre-Release Pokémon X and Y Characters
After defeating Zach, you'll move on to face Yavon and Zavi in the ZA Royale. While they might seem like standard opponents at first, there’s a deeper connection worth noting. The names Yavon and Zavi are likely a subtle nod to the pre-release names of Pokémon X and Y, where the characters Caleum and Serena were originally referred to as Xavier and Ivonne. If you're a fan of Pokémon history, this reference adds an interesting layer of nostalgia and depth to the game.
3. Lysander and Corbo: A Nod to Norse Mythology
Lysander, the mastermind behind Team Flare in Pokémon X and Y, makes a return in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, though his role has evolved. His connection to Corbo, leader of the Rust Syndicate, is a fascinating part of the story. The relationship between Lysander and Corbo is heavily inspired by Norse mythology, with Lysander resembling Odin—particularly with his one-eyed appearance and status as a wanderer.
Corbo, whose name is derived from the French word for crow, represents the two ravens of Odin: Huginn and Muninn, who are tasked with gathering information. This is reflected in Corbo’s role as a member of the mafia-like Rust Syndicate, which gathers intelligence on Lumios City. Phipe, another character tied to Lysander, also shares ties to this mythological symbolism, with his Skarmory being another subtle reference to Odin's ravens.
4. The Mysterious Ghost Girl: A Forgotten Reference
If you’re familiar with Pokémon X and Y, you’ll likely remember the eerie Lumios Ghost Girl, a character whose role was largely cut from the final game. In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the ghost girl gets a slight, but fascinating, callback in the characters of Ivor and Gwyn. Gwyn, who specializes in ghost-type Pokémon, and her brother Ivor, who heads the Justice Dojo, seem to be a direct reference to the ghost girl.
Ivor’s connection to fighting-type Pokémon and the dojo mirrors the setup of the building where the ghost girl was first found—an unexpected, but clever connection that adds depth to the game’s lore. It’s a neat nod for longtime fans of the series and adds an additional layer of mystery to the characters.
5. Lysander’s Eye Symbolism: A Deeper Meaning
One of the more subtle but poignant details about Lysander in Pokémon Legends: Z-A is the loss of his vision in one eye. This could be interpreted as a deeper symbolic gesture that ties back to Pokémon X and Y. In the earlier game, Lysander is the only member of Team Flare whose eyes are not covered, symbolizing his "vision" for a better world. However, in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, his literal and figurative loss of vision reflects his downfall and the collapse of Team Flare.
Additionally, the new characters of Team Flare Nuvo, Gisham and Griselle, wear glasses with clear frames that allow their eyes to be seen—signifying their loyalty to Lysander's cause but also hinting at their awareness of the flaws in his plan.
6. Cut Content: The Lost Ride Pokémon
A piece of cut content from Pokémon Legends: Z-A has recently been revealed, and it’s a huge missed opportunity for the game. At one point, players were supposed to be able to ride on Pokémon like Goat, Talonflame, Lucario, and Alakazam. While it’s unclear why this feature was cut, it would have been a fantastic addition to the game, especially with the potential to glide on Talonflame or teleport with Alakazam. It’s a sad loss for fans of the game who were hoping for a more immersive world.
7. Ash Ketchum Easter Egg: A Nostalgic Nod
Finally, in an unexpected twist, Pokémon Legends: Z-A includes a hidden Easter egg referencing Ash Ketchum. In a side quest called “The World’s Greatest Pikachu,” you’ll encounter a child who challenges you to a battle using only Pikachu. This child bears a striking resemblance to Ash, with his signature outfit and hair color. While this is likely a sly nod to the iconic anime protagonist, it’s a fun and touching tribute for players who have grown up with Ash over the years.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is filled with hidden references, clever nods, and deep-cut details that make it a must-play for any Pokémon fan. From subtle homages to Punch-Out!! and Norse mythology to the surprising Ash Ketchum Easter egg, the game rewards players who take the time to explore and look for these secrets. As you dive deeper into the game’s lore, you’ll find that there’s so much more to this world than meets the eye.
