The Trial of Chaos in Path of Exile 2 is a challenging Ascendancy Trial unlocked in Act 3's Chimeral Wetlands.
To unlock it, players must defeat the boss Xyclucian, the Chimera, who drops the Chimeral Inscribed Ultimatum—a key item required to access the trial. Xyclucian is a tough dragon-like enemy wielding elemental attacks (cold, fire, lightning, and poison) along with chaos and physical damage. A good strategy involves prioritizing fire and cold resistances, destroying stone pillars around the arena to temporarily trap the boss, and attacking safely during these moments.
Once obtained, the Ultimatum is used at the Temple of Chaos in the Wetlands to start the Trial of Chaos. The trial consists of multiple rounds (up to 10), each presenting distinct challenges like defeating monsters, surviving timers, escorting statues, collecting soul cores, sacrificing monsters, and fighting bosses. The rounds increase in difficulty as players progress.
During the trial, players select from three "Tribulations" before each round—negative modifiers that make the run harder, such as increased monster resistances or elemental effects.
Bosses appear at rounds 4, 7, and 10, with three possible challengers at each boss fight:
Uxmal, The Beastlord: Similar to Xyclucian but somewhat easier.
Bahlak, The Sky Seer: A bird-like enemy using elemental tornadoes.
Chetza, The Feathered Plague: A slow, powerful boss summoning minions and battlefield hazards.
After completing the 10 rounds, players can use three special Fates (dropped in the 10th round) to challenge The Trialmaster in a final pinnacle fight. Defeating The Trialmaster unlocks further Ascendancy points and may reward unique items and rare loot.
Summarized Steps:
Defeat Xyclucian, the Chimera to obtain the Chimeral Inscribed Ultimatum.
Use the Ultimatum at the Temple of Chaos to start the Trial of Chaos.
Complete multiple challenging rounds navigating tribulations and bosses.
Collect Fates from the 10th round to challenge the Trialmaster boss.
Defeat the Trialmaster for additional Ascendancy points and rewards.
The Trial of Chaos is considered one of the hardest Ascendancy Trials, demanding a well-prepared character with balanced resistances, strong damage, and good positioning skills. It offers significant rewards and progression in Ascendancy trees for players willing to face the intense challenges.
This unlock and run are essential for gaining critical Ascendancy points and experiencing some of PoE2’s toughest fights. The Trial of Chaos in Path of Exile 2 is unlocked in Act 3 within the Chimeral Wetlands by defeating the boss Xyclucian, the Chimera, who drops the key item called the Chimeral Inscribed Ultimatum. This Inscribed Ultimatum is required to access the Trial of Chaos located at the Temple of Chaos in the Wetlands.
Xyclucian is a tough, dragon-like boss with control over multiple elements—fire, cold, lightning, poison, chaos, and physical damage. Effective strategies involve prioritizing your resistances against fire and cold, and targeting stone pillars around the arena to trap the boss temporarily, giving opportunities to deal safe damage. Patience and good positioning are crucial as the boss has deadly area attacks.
Once you have the Ultimatum, you can enter the Trial of Chaos, which consists of up to 10 rounds of escalating challenges including monster kills, survival, object escort, and boss battles. Before each round, you choose one of three tribulations, which are negative modifiers that make the trials harder, such as increased resistances on enemies or elemental damage buffs.
Boss rounds (4, 7, and 10) feature one of three strong bosses: Uxmal the Beastlord (similar to Xyclucian), Bahlak the Sky Seer (a bird-like boss with tornado attacks), or Chetza the Feathered Plague (a summoner with area hazards). After the 10th round, defeating these bosses grants special items called Fates, which are used to challenge the Trialmaster—a demanding final boss encounter.
Defeating the Trialmaster unlocks additional Ascendancy points and rewards unique and valuable items, including powerful gear and modifiers.
