A more old (10 yearsor more) game that, despite continual changes and updates over the years is still considered as a classic and not "next thing RS Gold" (like MOH & Counterstrike – still alot players but not regularly maintained aside from servers that are generally player responsibilities).
Runescape has been viewed as "a kids MMORPG" by many gamers. This is based on point 1. The game has been updated regularly and updates over time. However, many players don't search at the reasons they believe it to be the case.
A poor marketing strategy. Jagex/Insight Ventures still heavily rely on word-of-mouth advertising and online ads however there are exceptions like the Gamer Awards and occasional television ads. This brings the game to the attention of people who otherwise might not even be aware. The only mentions of Runescape in mainstream media are those in news articles that have a negative bias (there are a handful of instances of pedophiles and scammers over the years) that may draw attention but is usually not the type of attention desired.
The SORWT SOF is a way to ensure that cash flows are maintained from a community that is shrinking due to people growing up & stopping play etc with less new players coming in every year while not addressing the issues I mentioned in the previous paragraph. It is a minimal cost method to fix a problem but is causing more Buy Old School RuneScape Gold. I am not a CFO and don't have access to the financials but the constant tweaks imply its not doing the job in the current state. |
