Exalted Orbs in Path of Exile 2 add a single random mod to a rare item, so smart crafters save them for high-ilvl bases, use bench blocks, and trade them as endgame currency.

Exalted Orbs (yeah, "Exalts") sit right at the center of PoE 2 crafting, because they let you push a rare item forward without blowing up what's already good. If you're short on time or just hate waiting on lucky drops, some players also use EZNPC to grab currency or items and keep their build moving while they save their premium crafting resources for the real upgrades.

What An Exalt Actually Does

The action is dead simple: right-click, then click a rare item with an open affix slot. One new modifier gets added. That's it. The tricky part is what it doesn't do—it won't reroll your existing mods like a Chaos Orb, so it feels "safer," but the new roll can still be useless. You'll feel that pain the first time you slam life regen when you needed resists. Exalts aren't about rolling the whole item; they're about taking a near-finished piece and asking for one more good line.

When To Use It (And When Not To)

People waste Exalts in Acts 1-6 all the time. It's almost a rite of passage, and it's almost always wrong. That axe you love in Act 3? You'll replace it fast. Exalts shine later, once you're farming Waystones and you can target high item level bases—think ilvl 80+ where the juicy tiers actually exist. That's when stuff like top-end crit multi, big gem level bumps, or premium speed rolls even have a chance to appear. Before that, you're basically paying a fortune to polish gear that's already on its way to the vendor.

Prepping The Slam Like A Real Crafter

Don't blind slam unless you're fine with losing value. Do a bit of setup first. Step 1: check how many prefixes and suffixes are open. Step 2: hit the crafting bench and add a cheap "blocker" mod you don't want, just to shrink the pool. Step 3: if you're using Omens, match the job—Sinistral if you need a prefix, Dextral if you need a suffix. It's not perfect control, but it turns the slam from pure vibes into a calculated risk. I usually start with weapons, because one strong damage line can change how the whole character feels.

Trading, Budgeting, And Staying Sane

In trade, Exalts are still a clean benchmark. You'll see listings priced at 1-2ex because everybody understands the value. And honestly, sometimes buying an upgrade is smarter than crafting one—no drama, no bricked item, instant power. If your stash is running low, play tighter. Farm efficiently, sell what you won't use, and save Exalts for pieces that are already close. When you're ready to spend, it also helps to compare your options against what's available on the market for POE 2 iteams so you're not slamming just because you're bored.
