Gray iron castings are a type of iron found in castings known for their gray color and appearance caused by fractured graphite in the material. Specifically, what makes gray iron "gray iron" is the structure of graphite flakes formed by the carbon in the component during cooling.

Gray cast iron is the result of the material used and the process used to cast the part. In other words, the properties of gray cast iron will change depending on the materials that are melted together and poured into the mold, and the process used for casting (mainly the cooling part of the process defines the properties of the cast iron) the casting vs. the rest of the process. )
