Charles Spurgeon (1834 - 1892) |
Charles Spurgeon was a great Calvinist evangelist
in Victorian England. He enjoyed cigars and was often quoted on the subject:
"When I have found intense pain relieved, a
weary brain soothed, and calm refreshing sleep obtained by a cigar, I
have felt grateful to God, and have blessed His name."
Mr. Spurgeon's reply to the gentleman who "had
heard he smoked, but could not believe it to be true," and asked
Mr. Spurgeon to satisfy him, is choice: "I cultivate my flowers
and burn my weeds."
"Well, dear friends, you know that some men
can do to the glory of God what to other men would be sin. And
notwithstanding what brother Pentecost has said, I intend to smoke a
good cigar to the glory of God before I go to bed to-night.
"If anybody can show me in the Bible the
command, 'Thou shalt not smoke,' I am ready to keep it; but I haven't
found it yet. I find ten commandments, and it's as much as I can do
to keep them; and I've no desire to make them into eleven or twelve.
"Why, a man may think it a sin to have his
boots blacked. Well, then, let him give it up, and have them
whitewashed. I wish to say that I'm not ashamed of anything whatever
that I do, and I don't feel that smoking makes me ashamed, and
therefore I mean to smoke to the glory of God." |

"What this country needs is a good five
cent cigar." - Thomas Marshall, Vice-President of the United
States, 1919.
"There are plenty of good five-cent cigars
in the country. The problem is they cost a quarter. What this country
needs is a good five-cent nickel." - Franklin P. Adams (1881-1960)
"Here, have a cigar. Light it up and be
somebody." - from the film Pete Kelly's Blues.
"Love is an exploding cigar we willingly
smoke" - Lynda Barry
"Man, the creature who knows he must die,
who has dreams larger than his
destiny, who is forever working a confidence
trick on himself, needs an
ally. Mine has been tobacco. " - John
Boynton Priestley
A glass is good, and a lass is good,
And a pipe to smoke in cold weather;
The world is good, and the people are good,
And we 're all good fellows together.
John O'Keefe (1747-1833)
"Tobacco is a dirty weed,
I like it
It satisfies no normal need,
I like it
It makes you thin, it makes you lean,
It takes he hair right off your bean
It's the worst damn stuff I've ever seen
I like it."
-- Graham L. Hemminger, Penn State Froth, 1915
Come in here, dear boy, have a cigar.
You're gonna go far,
You're gonna fly high,
You're never gonna die,
You're gonna make it if you try;
"Have a Cigar" by Pink Floyd
From a Dear Abby column many years ago:
Dear Abby: What is your opinion of a man who
constatnly smokes cigars ?
Signed, CURIOUS
Dear Curious: He is courageous, self-confident,
masculine, sophisticated, and uninhibited.
